What is Keratin?
Keratin is a protein that makes up our hair and nails
How does it work?
(Using Keratin Complex)
Keratin is infused into the hair with heat. Hair is first washed with a clarifying shampoo, “rough dried” and then the smoothing product is applied and processed under a cap for 20 minutes. Hair is then dried again with the product still in the hair with a vent brush. Once hair is completely dried, hair is then flat ironed at 450° which is higher than what is normally used in everyday styling temperature of no more than 350°. Once finished, you are advised to not shampoo the hair for 72 hours and to follow up your hair washes with Keratin Complex shampoo and conditioner.
The treatment smoothes the cuticle layer by filling it with keratin and eliminates hair frizz. This process as a side effect may also relax or straighten the natural curl in the hair. This treatment may last 3 months after the first application and the more the treatment is applied over time it may last up to 6 months. The frequency you wash your hair plays a big part on how long the treatment will last. If possible, I recommend you wash your hair every other day and always make sure you are using the proper hair care products.
Just as the hair for hair extensions, keratin smoothing systems has been put on the controversy spotlight because of the claims of formaldehyde content in the products and the harm this may cause to the health of the environment and its consumers.
Many companies have reformulated their products and even re-named them so that there is no connection or association with any of the formaldehyde containing products. Formaldehyde is known as a carcinogen. A carcinogen is any substance or agent that tends to produce a cancer. Brazilian Blowout has been accused by the Oregon’s Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) of containing a higher level of formaldehyde in their products than the permitted in cosmetics at concentrations less than 0.2%. In return Brazilian Blowout are now coming back with a counter-lawsuit because of the lack of information and accuses OSHA of gross negligence and believes OSHA has violated the proper testing protocol, thereby invalidating the findings.
Keratin Complex by Coppola stands behind their product and say that there is NO formaldehyde in the product and there is less than 1% aldehyde that is totally encapsulated and never releases into a gas form and those that get watery eyes when using this with a client is from the p-benzoquinone.
I personally have never experienced my clients or my own eyes watering through the process. I feel very comfortable using Keratin Complex and all of my clients on who I have performed this service continue to do so. I advice you do your own research of these treatments and decide what is best for you.
